Wind-Up Lights

By Barney

Anyone who is into camping will know how much fun it can be. In fact there’s not much that I don’t like about camping but one of the most annoying and potentially hazardous is running out of light. Running out of batteries or camping fuel in a remote camping spot can be disastrous. For this reason it’s a good idea to always have a crank lantern or wind-up lights on hand.

The dynamo technology of wind-up lights has come a long way. If you’re buying a crank lantern you can expect an efficient wind-up mechanism that can produce around 30 minutes of light from 1 minute of winding. In fact some of the very good wind-up lights can give you up to 4 hours from a full wind up. A crank lantern will use LED’s which offer a bright light while being very long-lasting.

These wind-up lights are environmentally friendly and are designed to be either sat on a table, to hang on a tree or inside a tent. To make them even more versatile, many wind-up lights utilize a 12 volt in-car charger, so if you’re feeling particularly worn out, you can give it a quick charge.

A crank lantern can come in many different types and sizes, but they all utilize a similar dynamo technology. A larger crank lantern will transfer and store power in a internal battery, while smaller wind-up lights such as a wind-up flashlight will use a capacitor to convert the generated power from the wind-up mechanism to light.

Because wind-up lights don’t require batteries or fuel, they are perfect as a secondary or emergency backup camping lighting source. In truth wind-up lights are a perfect emergency lighting source not only for camping, but also to have around the house. A crank lantern is a very wise addition to your camping lighting inventory.
