Cleaning a Propane Lantern

By Barney

With correct care and upkeep, your propane lantern will provide years of camping service. Cleaning your propane lantern is a particularly straightforward process and following these simple ideas can prolong the life of your camping lantern. A clean lantern casts more light and runs much more efficiently, so make a habit of cleaning yours on a consistent basis. For the best usage of your propane lantern, you must clean and check the lantern after each camping trip. Use warm water and a mild soap, like dish-washing detergent, to wipe down the globe and the exterior of the lantern.

Bugs are sometimes drawn to the warm, soft light of a propane lantern and a campsite in a wooded environment could mean leaves or other waste has gotten caught within the lantern so it’s important to scrub out the burner area too. Allow the lantern to completely dry before placing it away to stop rust or other damage. It is also best practice to check the mantles after each use. Most propane lanterns use an insta-clip mantle that’s straightforward to replace.

At the end of the camping season, do a particularly in-depth inspection of your propane lantern and clean each part of the lantern very well. If any spiderwebs or such debris has amassed around the burner, you need to disassemble the lantern and clean out any tubes which will have became clogged. A little, wire bottle brush works really well for this task. Once your propane lantern is clean and you have replaced any crucial parts, dry the lantern and store it in an airtight bag to stop insects and debris from getting within and blocking up openings.

In truth, cleaning your propane lantern after each camping trip takes less time than unpacking! It’s a quick and easy process, and this correct care will make sure you have a durable propane lantern that continues to offer a bright, consistent light for hopefully, a long, long time.
